MSA as per AIAG or VDA volume 5?

As a matter of fact, both the AIAG and VDA have the very same set of tools when it comes to the measurement system analysis.

The main difference in some of the techniques is the calculation process. For instance, the repeatability analysis and linearity as per the AIAG are made based on a hypothesis test while the VDA proposes a statistical calculation based on the measurement uncertainty. I personally like the VDA method better but it is certainly more complicated to understand and to use.

If you need to see the overall differences, you can read the post MSA AIAG vs. VDA 5.

Do you need a software to perform the analysis?

It depends on how complex your measurement system is, how often you perform the analysis, which techniques you use, etc. However, excel models can also do the job and are FREE!!!! You can either find them in the MSA menu on your right upper corner or you can select here below the tool you need and go directly to the excel form. Please make sure you understand the calculation process before using the forms and have the data ready (as needed). You can also find related posts in this blog and/or you can get the book for more details and explanations.

As you may know, there are car makers that propose a plausibility analysis and have a complex mathematical model for some of the techniques (i.e. Audi). In such cases I would recommend to get a good software which offers exactly the calculation model required. However, in my experience, the excel calculation forms are accepted by most of the automotive customers you may have. If doubts arise, discuss with the SQE and get approval if needed.

MSA calculation sheets

I organized the forms for the AIAG and VDA models. So, select the one you need, click on and you will land in the page where you will find the excel file. Read the header of each form before using  so you make sure it is the model you need.

Calculation sheets for both AIAG and VDA

I wish you a successful MSA!
